Religion, Mythology and Starbucks

Eric Burns - excellent fellow, and creator of a fine new blog called Banter Latte - has written a post about the difference between the first two, and how it all relates to the way that Starbucks coffee, well, sucks.  The story that he tells to explain the latter is a good one, and I enjoyed it greatly; it is also, alas, a demonstration why mythology is generally a disaster for humanity.

So I'm sitting there at UU services...

...in front of the daschunds wearing  sun hats.  I'm trying not to sneeze at the dog hair, listening to the sermon about service dogs - and I look down to note that the hymn that we're about to be singing is "How Much For That Doggie in the Window".

Granted, they were there for the Fidos for Freedom charity (worthy one, too).  And I'm sure that people attending a Catholic service for the first time have similar moments of surreality.  But, still, this works-based theology thing takes some getting used to.

Pre-Cana, this time.

Engaged Encounter, to be precise - and I can't recommend it enough.  Intense, comprehensive, genuinely insightful; fatiguing as all hell, but well worth the time and money, and I'm glad that the Church requires something like it for marriage prep.

Big lesson: communicate.  A lot.  As much as possible, really.

The aforementioned quatrain.

Blipping things are harder to write than they look, you know?  And there's no bloody rhyme for 'Atlantia' - no really good ones, at least. Grumble, grumble, groan...

Bemused observation.

This is a facet of the complex and convoluted entity the we call the Roman Catholic Church (which is my own faith, btw).

So is this.

Odd, no?

PS: For the record, I have no particular gripe against the practices and beliefs of the second link - although the bit about the tiles raised an eyebrow.  You don't need to be the Son of God in order to have the discernment to put the nix on yellow orange colored ones...
